چکیده

The BBGKY hierarchy is used to derive a generalization of the Lenard-Balescu plasma kinetic equation that accounts for wave-particle scattering due to instabilities that originate from discrete particle motion. Application to convective instabilities is emphasized for which the growing waves either propagate out of the domain of interest or modify the particle distribution to reduce the instability amplitude before nonlinear amplitudes are reached. Two such applications are discussed: Langmuir’s paradox and determining the Bohm criterion for multiple ion species plasmas. In these applications, collisions are enhanced by ion-acoustic and ion-ion two-stream instabilities respectively. The relationship between this kinetic theory and quasilinear theory is discussed. Fluid description of collisional current filamentation instability of a weakly ionized plasma in the presence of magnetic field

In this paper, the collisional filamentation instability of an electron beam-weakly magnetized and ionized plasma has been investigated in the presence of background plasma, using the fluid description. By describing the equilibrium configuration in the presence of binary collision terms between charged and neutral particles and using the local approximation method, the dispersion relation (DR)...

A Gas-Kinetic Stability Analysis of Self-Gravitating and Collisional Particulate Disks with Application to Saturn’s Rings

Linear theory is used to determine the stability of the self-gravitating, rapidly (and nonuniformly) rotating, two-dimensional, and collisional particulate disk against small-amplitude gravity perturbations. A gas-kinetic theory approach is used by exploring the combined system of the Boltzmann and the Poisson equations. The effects of physical collisions between particles are taken into accoun...

Waves in expanding electronegative plasmas containing double layers

Expanding electronegative EN plasmas have been previously observed, experimentally, to generate wave activity. Using a particle-in-cell PIC code we have investigated these waves in expanding EN plasmas containing a double layer DL between an upstream source region and an expanded downstream region. Oxygen reaction rates were used but modified to correspond more closely to experimental condition...

Instability-enhanced collisional friction can determine the Bohm criterion in multiple-ion-species plasmas.

A generalized Lenard-Balescu theory that accounts for instability-enhanced collective responses is used to calculate the collisional friction between ion species in the plasma-boundary transition region (presheath). Ion-ion streaming instabilities are shown to cause such a strong frictional force that the relative flow speed between ion species cannot significantly exceed the critical threshold...
